The mission of the Research Division in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the Detroit Medical Center is to advance the field of musculoskeletal medicine, science, and surgery through both basic and clinical research.

DMC has attracted the best and brightest physicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and trainees to deliver world-class orthopaedic care, education, and research. The Orthopaedic department is a leader in surgical innovation and performing cutting-edge research. The research faculty and attending physicians deliver both surgical and primary-care service to patients. The research programs offered continue to advance orthopaedic research in biomechanics, kinesiology, physical therapy, neurophysiology of orthopaedic pain, cartilage regeneration and tissue engineering, rehabilitation, nutrition, emerging artificial intelligence applications, and more.

DMC Orthopaedic faculty members are devoted to research, and are advancing patient care by studying disease pathways, helping to develop a broad range of surgical devices and technologies, and study the safety and effectiveness of new procedures.

Our attending faculty physicians are supported by research professionals, fellows, residents, and students who work in the subdivisions of the Orthopaedics department. Studies are frequently conducted with faculty from other basic science and clinical departments including biochemistry, biomedical engineering, and radiology. The department’s faculty members serve on a wide variety of editorial boards and regularly contribute to scientific journals, lecturing at regional, national, and international conferences.

Dr. Kerellos Nasr is our Faculty Medical Student Director. He along with the Program Coordinator will be your point of contact throughout your rotation.

Our away rotation offers a full educational experience and workload similar to that of a first year resident. Students will gain insight into the Orthopaedic residency program at DMC and have the opportunity to rotate through various orthopaedic subspecialties. 

Students participate in daily morning inpatient rounds followed by outpatient clinics or operative cases. Individual or group discussions are conducted daily with attending staff and residents. Students are encouraged to attend weekly grand rounds and journal clubs. 

We encourage anyone with a passion for orthopaedic surgery who is in their last year of medical school to submit an application for an opportunity to rotate with us in our hospitals and meet our residents and faculty. Please note, not everyone who rotates will be guaranteed an interview with the program.

Along with their daily rotation shifts, every student will be required to complete the following:

• 2 weekend call shifts
• 1 weeknight shift per week
• An interesting case presentation
